On Sunday the 28th March 1948,aged 22, Jack was on his way out dressed in his 'Sunday best'.He was walking through the Middleport area of Stoke on Trent when he came across a young girl drowning in the Mersey Weaver canal.Without hesitation Jack jumped in and rescued the girl saving her life. His difficulty came trying to explain to his irate parents how he had ruined his 21st birthday watch and sunday best suit!Jack's selfless act was acknowledged and he was awarded a life saving medal and certificate at Hanley Court from the Liverpool shipwreck and Humane Society.A local jeweller learned of his actions and repaired his watch free of charge. The court also awarded him a small sum of money - enough to buy a new suit, with some over for himself to enjoy. Jack never mentioned this to his family and the medal / cerificate was only discovered when he moved house in the 1990's.Typical'Modest Jack' *The family hope to try and find out the girls name, and locate her if she is still alive.
